Competition Cycle Ranch continues to show signs of rebuilding under the watchful guidance of Nicholas Burgess. His parents (long time track owners Robbie and Sue) were there to help him and wife Angela. Factory road racer Joshua Hayes and his wife Melissa were on hand to cross over to motocross to play in the dirt with the locals. Josh won championships in Super stock and Formula Extreme. He now rides for the Arian Honda Team, which is how, in his words, "I gotta make a living."

Josh showed good physical and mental conditioning by racing four motos, with no big mistakes and finishing strong at the end of each moto. He had an unusual style for motocross, "backing it in," through the turns. In old school racing we called it "brake sliding," where we used the back brake to start the bike sliding before easing onto the throttle to complete the turn. It worked for him as he won the Senior +30 class over some stiff competition from Joel White, John Giambelluca and Terry Cambre. Giambelluca also gave him a run in the money class, until he went down in the first moto and had to play catch-up the rest of the race.

Melissa Hayes easily won the women’s class on her Honda while taking second from the guys in the 125 Beginner class. She is just getting used to the discipline of motocross.

"Magic Mitch" Gourney arrived late and tried his new Bardwell/City Cycles YZF 250. He took a slow practice lap in the first moto of the combined A and B class, then capitalized on Roy Barrios’ mistake and took off, catching half of the A riders who were double gated by three turns ahead. Gourney was the only one to jump the whole whoop section, just barely catching his back wheel on the last bump, with front wheel high in the air. His High School Motocross teammate Barrios took his G & C Honda to victory in the 2 Stroke Challenge and won a $100 gift certificate from City Cycles in Baton Rouge. Other HSMX team members, Dominick Sparacino and Hayden Bordelon won the Nov/Int Open and Schoolboy classes respectively.

Jason Manuel won the money class on his Champion Cycles Suzuki with Zach Lawler placing second on his Bardwell Yamaha. Manuel was able to get some payback as Lawler beat him the week before at Wildwood MX in Kentwood. It pays to race on your home track. Josh Hayes rode to a consistent third in the Expert class behind these two.
