Diamond Don’s 7th Annual Vintage National
and AHRMA MX Legends series round 4
Jefferson, Texas
April 3-5, 2009
What do you get when you combine Texas bar-b-que, world-class guitar playing,
a European-style motocross track, perfect weather, vendors, food booths
(including such southern delicacies as gator-on-a-stick), dozens of legendary
motocross racers and 680 amateur vintage race entries? A motocross racing event
that was "over-the-top"!
Diamond Don Rainey and crew, along with the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association’s National Vintage Series round 4, was sponsored in part by Jake’s Garage, Speed and Sport, the Penton Owners Group and Kawasaki. Francene reported that there were 997 people through the gate, up from last year’s 880. There were 680 race entries with 375 spectators, up from last years’ 280, which considering the economy, is good news.
The highlight of this year’s event was the "AHRMA Vintage-Am 2009" race
series Europe vs. USA. On the European team was Graham Noyce (Great Britain),
Herbert Schmitz (Germany), Lars Larson (Sweden) and Zdenek Velkey
(Czechoslovakia). Riding for team USA was Danny Laporte, Gary Jones, Chuck Sun
and Bill Silverthorne. Modeled after the old days of Trans-am and Inter-am, the
2 race series started at Brad Lackey’s race in Sand Hill, California and ended
at Diamond Don’s in Jefferson, Texas. Team USA won the Vintage-am challenge
series with 85 to 69 total points, awarding them the trophy for America in 2009.
Saturday Chuck Sun was able to secure the lead in the "Vintage-Am" race with Herbert Schmitz second and Danny Laporte third. Gary Jones had to pull out when his Honda ran out of fuel. After topping off in the pits he came back out to finish the race. Laporte was able to pull off a "magical pass" on the last lap to secure second behind teammate Sun to finish moto one.
Herbert
Schmitz had all night to think about that pass that Laporte put on him and he
wasted no time jumping out early and keeping the lead from Chuck Sun. Danny
Laporte moved up steadily to the leaders until he was able to hook up with
team-mate Sun by lap four. Gary Jones held down the fourth spot with Graham
Noyce and Bill Silverthorne rounding out the top six places. Laporte was able to
slip by Sun on a sweeper back in the woods, but Sun was able to re-secure second
by the last lap. However it was Schmitz who displayed smooth, consistent riding
with a strong desire for victory and won the second moto battle. Still, USA won
the war and the trophy for 2009.
This year Diamond Don and AHRMA honored motocross legend Steve Wise, who was on hand to hang out and lead the church service. The late cross-country legend Al Baker was honored as well. Roy Jenkins and JP Parsons announced the races and AHRMA off-road director Alex Moroz was race referee. Many AHRMA volunteers pitched in to provide a quality race, including newlyweds Rolf and Tami Rice Greenhill. Even the new executive director of AHRMA, Dave Lamberth worked hard giving direction and flagging on the track.
Motocross Files creator Todd Huffman of Pipeline Digital Media was on hand to
show his latest videos at the Friday night dinner with the MX legends who were
on hand to race and just hang out. Other celebrities included: Brad Lackey,
Marty Tripes, Dick Mann, and Women Pioneers of Motocross Tami Rice and Bonnie
Warch.
Cross-country and Trials competed on Friday, with boiled crawfish and bar-b-que
served Friday night. On Saturday the vintage MX raced and Louisiana recording
artist Chris Leblanc laid down his bluesy and rockabilly sounds.
Sunday
morning began with a worship service, followed by Post-vintage MX racing. The
trophy presentation and Legends autograph session were on Sunday evening. Then
attendees were then treated to a wind-down party, complete with the moto-band,
confederate cannon and fireworks!
The real meat of this vintage national was the amateur racing where hundreds of competitors went head to head in mostly full gates to compete for series points, bragging rights or just plain fun.
