The American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) teamed up with Diamond Don’s to provide another off the hook vintage national off-road motorcycle racing festival. This year’s 8th Annual Riverport National had 1050 attendees which is up from last year.  There were 855 race entries as compared to 558 last year, an increase of 297!

Francene Rainey said, "This was the biggest year we have ever had. It was a smashing success thanks to the support from AHRMA and their volunteers, all of our sponsors and our staff.  We look forward to an even larger event next year."

Over 270 people attended the 2009 National Off-Road Awards Presentation at the Jefferson Visitor Center on Saturday evening. Francene and Diamond Don Rainey underwrote all of the expenses for the banquet including the cost of the building, food, decorations and serving staff. Diamond Don put his own special touch on the cooking and served a traditional Tex-Mex meal of beef or chicken fajitas, grilled vegetables, tamales, pinto beans and pecan pralines.100% of the proceeds from the dinner tickets went to AHRMA.

Off-Road Director Fred Guidi had this to say: "The first national banquet held at Diamond's was a huge success. Steve Wise was the guest speaker and shared with the group tales of his years on the circuit including his first national win as a privateer, at Keyser's Ridge Maryland. Guest presenter, World champion, Trampas Parker entertained those in attendance with his wit and humor. All in all a great evening of honor for our 2009 Champions!"

The AHRMA Legends Group honored the storied Rio Bravo MX Park as the MX track legend of the weekend. It is currently under renovation by Danny Erdeljac and he can be contacted at www.riobravomx.org.

Trampas Parker, the fastest racer to come out of Louisiana was honored as the Diamond Don Legend of the weekend. This hall of fame racer won two World Championships, and missed a third by only three points! Not only did he sign autographs and hang out to talk all weekend, but won the cross country race on Friday and every motocross class he didn’t have bike trouble in on Saturday and Sunday. He currently trains young racers at his track in Mansfield, LA and still competes in cross country and motocross events around the country. He can be reached at trampasparkermxs.com and desotomotorsportpark.com.

Brad Lackey and Marty Tripes spent the weekend with us hanging out and telling stories.  Steve Wise brought the message at the worship service which was Sunday morning right after the Richie Vallandingham Memorial service. The Chris Leblanc band performed nightly with their Bayou Blues and Louisiana Soul sound. Roy Jenkins and JP Parsons were the race announcers. The race photographer can be contacted at mxphotography.com.

Saturday

Oh yeah, there was racing, too! Wade Woodall won the first moto of the event on his CZ in the Classic 125 Expert class. Jeff Nagel brought his Honda into second in front of Andy Blackburn’s CZ to open the event. Pat Leahy took a 650 Yamaha to victory in the Sportsman Open Twins, the sound of his twin pipes thundering down the finish line straight-a-way.

The 40+ expert class gave the crowd their first taste of legendary champions racing against each other. Billy Liles, Chuck Sun, Alex Moroz and Trampas Parker led off early into the woods, but Kirk "Doughboy" Spencer, a local vintage expert from Texas burst out of the woods with the lead on his Maico. Chuck Sun and Trampas Parker pushed each other hard behind him, with Trey Jorski fourth. While Spencer extended his lead, Parker was getting used to his first ride on the borrowed CZ and Sun was making friends with his borrowed Bultaco. The Parker/Sun battle closed up on Spencer at the end, but it was not in time as Spencer won the first moto. Spencer did not start the second moto, however, leaving the same order, Parker, Sun and Jorski at the finish line.

AHRMA officials also raced. Executive Director Dave Lamberth took his Suzuki 125 to victory in the Intermediate class, Off-Road Director Fred Guidi raced a 100 Hodaka to second in the Expert class and Cross-Country Director Teddy Landers took third in the 60+ Intermediate class. Two trustees took home the fine metal, water-cut plaques: Corky Root won the Premier 500 Expert and took second in two other classes and Debbie Poole took third in the Classic 250 Intermediate. Special thanks to Rolf Greenhill for dropping his classes to man the finish line flagging station and remaining calm when Tami crashed (She's ok, but JP named the turn after her.)

Trampas Parker faced off with another AHRMA champion in the Sportsman 500 Expert class with Bob Speiss. Tampas opened a five second lead on Speiss by lap two with Rhett Smith and Billy Liles sneaking up from the pack. Parker kept tabs on the riders behind them and rode his CZ just fast enough to secure the win. Speiss and Smith rounded out the podium.

Parker led the second moto while Smith moved up behind Speiss to do battle. Suddenly Parker’s motor started sounding like it had a compression release. He pulled over and unscrewed the spark plug the rest of the way, then screwed it back in hand tight and got back in the race, losing a half lap. Bob Speiss put on the speed and won the race with Rhett Smith a close second

The largest class was the 50+ Intermediate which had to be separated into two divisions. Division A ran with the 50+ Novice in race eight. Jim Vaughn won on his Maico with last year’s champ Glen Romero in a close second on his Honda and Karl Poindexter in third. In the second moto Romero borrowed a Kawasaki from Robbie Kahn and found it smoother than his Honda, surfing it to the win over Jim Vaughn and Karl Poindexter.

Jeff Kring looked as smooth as silk on his baby blue Bultaco, taking the win in the first moto of the 50+ Int B class over Mark Hosbach and Sam Baugh’s Kawasaki’s. But it was Hosbach who had the speed in the second moto to score the overall win, with Mike Elshout’s Honda trailing and Kring finishing in third.

One of the best rivalry’s of the weekend was Team Bultaco’s Mark Stahlman and Cody Thomas on the Orazio Honda. They matched up for the first time in the 125 Sportsman class and got tangled up in turn six when Thomas made an inside pass and bumped with Stahlman who went down. Thomas slapped his handlebar in disappointment for the loss of his competitor when he looked back and saw him on the ground. But they would get many more good battles over the weekend. The next time was in the Sportsman 250 class at race 10. Thomas got the holeshot, but Stahlman wasted no time taking it away as Elbert "Iron Man" Simon was pushing him – hard. Rhett Smith was on the move after a mediocre start with Tom Bellamy, Wade Woodall and Oscar Gaetan in tow. Eventually Simon would drop out with bike problems, leaving Stahlman with a huge straight-and-a-half lead over Thomas. Stahlman cruised to victory while Smith probed Thomas’ defenses a few times before making a pass somewhere back in the woods to prove once again that youth and brashness is no match for experience and sneakability.

In the second moto Stahlman picked up where he left off, bulling his Bultaco into the lead, followed by Elbert Simon, Rhett Smith and Matthew Mosely. Simon disappeared to the woods monster leaving Smith and Mosely arguing over the lead. Cody Thomas kept third while Stahlman won the double moto victory in front of Smith’s (2-2), Moseley’s (5-3) and Thomas’ (3-5).

Bill Silverthorn led Wes Willis, Loyd Morgan and Billy Click in the 60+ Expert class on his Husky. Morgan tried to come in hard to pass in the infield right before the scoring tower (Tami’s turn), but slid out, almost going down, leaving Willis in possession of second with a little breathing room. Silverthorn took his red Husky to victory with Willis also riding his Husky to second, saving his breath for the auction later that evening.

In the second moto Silverthorn made a nice pass on Wes Willis, finding some better traction and pulled away. Billy Click kept his third; giving Husqvarna the top three spots all the way to the checkered flag.

It was Trampas Parker who got out early on Elbert Simon, Bob Speiss and the rest of the Open Age Expert class in race 12 and held on to win. In race 13 Trey Jorski led Chuck Sun, Rhett Smith, Bill Silverthorn and Peter Harsteen in the 50+ Expert class. Jorski, whom Trey Canard is named after, continues to ride as hard as he did as a pro back in the 70’s when he had a top 12 finish in the last race of the 1975 season at Waggaman, LA, which was featured on the movie, "Once Chance to Win." That race, which "Jammin’ Jimmy" Wienert won the championship in, had many of today’s competitors – when they were mere kids of course. Sun, however, went on to win, leaving Jorski holding down second. Silverthorn and Smith had some nice racing for the third position, which Silverthorn eventually took to the checkers.

In the second moto Jorski had problems with his pipe hanging off, having to settle for sixth. Silverthorn took his Husky to a strong second, followed by Tom Bellamy and Van Hice. Chuck Sun won both motos, showing the speed he used in the early 80’s to help bring America an MX Des Nations Championship.

Trampas Parker, Ryan Morocco, Bob Speiss, Elbert Simon and Matt Mosely led off the second moto of race 12. By the end of the first lap Parker had Simon breathing down his neck past the scoring stand. Like the fast riders do, Parker went just as fast as he needed to go to preserve the win, leaving Simon in the second slot, Morocco third and Speiss fourth.

Sunday

Sunday’s Post-Vintage racing began under the threat of rain. Although practice and the first few motos got away with a dry track, the drizzle started about three races into the first moto. By the fifth race the track began to deteriorate and by the eighth race the track finally succumbed to the moisture and it turned into a full-blown mud race. As a racer in the 13th moto, I can attest to the fact that the track was very muddy and treacherous, although passable, having gone down three times and getting lapped by Trampas Parker! It’s a good thing Potts Thomas, who was given responsibility for the track prep, decided NOT to open it up with the discs Saturday night, but just smoothed it over because of the impending rain. At least it didn’t storm, just a steady off and on sprinkle.

Trey Jorski led off the first moto of race two, the 50+ Expert class on his Suzuki with Chuck Sun’s Mugen Honda in second. Though Sun came up hard on Jorski at the finish, Jorski edged him out by a bike length for the victory while Rhett Smith finished third. Doug Taft came back to win the second moto in the mud to take the overall.

Jeff Kring traded in his Bultaco for a Yamaha on day two and made it go fast, too. He easily outpaced Karl Poindexter and Jim Vaughn in the 50+ Intermediate class. Poindexter finished second behind Mark Hosbach the second moto, giving him a one point overall advantage over Jim Vaughn for the overall finish. Sixteen riders did not start the second moto, leaving an eight bike race.

Wendell Simmons raced vintage for the very first time and won the first moto of the Ultima 500 Expert on Potts Thomas’ Yamaha. Billy Liles and Jeffrey Simon kept him honest. Jeffrey’s brother Elbert shared the track with them in the Open Age Expert class, the two brothers scooting around in the third and fourth positions. Elbert took the win in his class, while Jeffrey scored second in his.

It was Elbert Simon that made the biggest statement about his skill by racing the Open Age Expert and 125 GP Expert classes back-to-back! Try going from a big open bike to a little 125 in back-to-back classes without a break when you get to feelin’ cocky. He almost went down at the start of the 125 class, but got acclimated quickly and went on to win over Chris Brewington and Terry Gates. Brewington went on to win the second moto with Simon second.

Billy Click was clicking on all (one) cylinders to win the 60+ Expert class on his Yamaha in the second moto to take the overall. Loyd Morgan and Wes Willis finished in front of him in the first moto, with Morgan being one of the DNS riders in the second moto.

Trampas Parker took a double moto win in the GP 500 Expert class in front of Chuck Rules’ (3-2), Rhett Smith’s (2-4) and Steve Bond’s (4-3).
