Jefferson, TX – March 31 - April 1, 2007

In the movie, "Gone in 60 Seconds," actor Nicholas Cage played the part of a reformed car thief who was trying to save his brother’s life by stealing 50 cars in 24 hours. His favorite car was a Shelby GT 500 Mustang which had alluded him all his years. When explaining to a classic car dealer how he was a collector who had excellent taste in the best vintage cars, the dealer recognized him as a "connoisseur" of cars.

"Connoisseurs" of time-honored motocross, trials and cross-country competition motorcycles converged on Jefferson, TX to indulge in their love of vintage motorcycles in Diamond Don’s Legends of MX series. Not only do many collect the classic race bikes, but they restore, ride and even race them. This spring, connoisseurs of dirt bikes came from as far away as Australia to display their treasures, admire, bench race and put their bikes to the ultimate test once again – on the race track. This was also AHRMA’s (American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association) "Legends’ of Vintage Series," round 3 of 17, with Saturday being the Vintage and Sunday, post-vintage racing.

A stroll through the pits was a journey through time. Penton, BSA, Triumph, Maico, KTM, Bultaco, Husqvarna, Can-Am, Montessa, CZ, AJS, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki were all represented. Legendary racers were present to race such as Brad Lackey Danny Laporte, Billy Lyle, Ron Pomeroy and other past and current champions. Laporte won his classes on a 74 and an 82 Yamaha, and was heard remarking how "this race brought back lots of found memories," and "if I could make more time he’d do this more often."

A photo was taken as Laporte crossed the finish line in front of a pit board that read, "Let Broc by," in commemoration of a famous moment in MX history. The broad smile on his face after winning a race gave indication that we’ll see him again in vintage races. Former World Champ Lackey is a regular on the AHRMA circuit, allowing riders a shot at racing him. Bill Silverthorne, two-time winner of the Baja 1000 raced in the 50+ Expert class. Former NBA basketball player Rik Smits won the Sportsman 500 class. The motocross sidecar class was won by the husband wife team of Janette Player and Morgan Berce from Big Bend, CA.

Lesser known and up-and-coming riders such as OK’s Elbert Simon and LA’s Mac Edmonston put on their own entertainment on the track. Simon raced four motos within a five moto span, back to back to back, garnering him the "Iron-man Award." Simon, though only 21, already has 17 years of racing experience. He also races a YZ250f and YZ450f in modern competition successfully. The talented Okie put his experience into words:

"Race four on the Can-Am I came out in second place, and hit a guy’s back tire and fell over, went down, caught back up again, hit him again and fell again. I ended up in third place in that first moto. Race eight, I got the holeshot and won that moto. I won race nine, then in race ten I got second because I was worn out; cause’ I figured second was as good as first in the first moto. Then in the second moto, I got a bad start and my bike wasn’t runnin’ that good, so I ended up in second overall. Then race eight I got the holeshot and won it. Race nine I got the holeshot, then on the second lap going back to the big air jump, my chain snapped. My friend picked me up on a four-wheeler and brought me back to the starting line for the next race. I got my 81’ filled up with gas and ended up winning that race. Then in race 12 on the GP125 Expert, I got the holeshot on it, was winning until the last lap when my spark plug cap started comin’ off. So I’m tryin’ to hold it on with my hand, getting’ shocked while I’m ridin’ the bike. [laughter from the crowd]. It wasn’t all that great but I still ended up second overall. I had fun. I’d like to thank Diamond Don for giving me an opportunity to come out here and have a great time and my Mom and Dad for bringin’ me."

Mac Edmonston, who won the 125 GP Expert class was 17 seconds ahead on the final moto when he turned to glance over his shoulder at the finish turn, cross-rutted and crashed over the bars as he took the checkered flag. When asked if he did that finish line summersault on purpose he said, "Yes," to the delight of the roaring crowd.

Race attendees had plenty of entertainment including a turn of the century steam train that shuttled people to historic Jefferson, to enjoy the shops, restaurants and museums. Friday night was the big crawfish boil/bar-b-que/beer blast, complete with a benefit auction to help the family of the late Jim Pomeroy. Todd Huffman brought some colorful uncut versions of his Motocross files and told some personal stories from the legends of motocross. Excerpts of the Motocross files were being shown on a screen next to the stage where the live band performed.
