My favorite race of the entire year - the biggest, funnest, celebrity sprinkled, vintage off-road motorcycle celebration/race - Diamond Don's 9th annual Riverport National - was held just across the border from Shreveport in Jefferson, Texas on the weekend of April 15-17th. Vintage Trials and Cross-Country races were held on Friday, motocross on Sat, and Post-Vintage on Sunday. Brad Lackey, Trampas Parker, Marty Tripes, Bill Silverton, Trampas Parker, Tommy Croft and Trey Jorski were on hand. This years honoree was Gary Bailey. There were crawfish, bar-b-que and lots and lots of old race bikes - going at it hard on the track. I got to announce with JP Parsons, and lead the church service with Steve Wise. For more info click here.
The big Marty Tripes Vintage reunion race, Nov 12-14 has been moved to 3 Palms due to too much water from the inclement weather. Marty Smith will teach a school, there will be a 100cc class challenge race, along with the usual vintage racing. For more info go to www.riobravomx.com

Modern MX racers discover a secret in Alabama - vintage tracks are challenging and fun! What used to be a vintage only race now attracts modern racers in droves. Running Brand GP MX had over 260 entries on Nov. 15th. Located in northern AL near the GA border, this farm, turned MX track is over 2 miles long and 40 feet wide. It features lots of elevation changes, long, fast straights, grassy fields, rocky downhill's, off-cambers all over the place and even a water crossing! This is what motocross tracks were like in the earliest days in Europe - a cross between MX and scrambles. It was a blast, racing a REAL old-school motocross track, believe me! For pictures go here. They only race twice in the spring and twice in the fall and will close out 2009 with a race on Dec. 6.

The 2008 Daytona Supercross will go down in history as one of the most exciting, but slow races ever as torrential rain turned the RC designed track into the kind of slop that 4wd trucks like to run through. Holeshot MX under
new management. Here's the background on Robbie and Sue
Burgess: Robbie's
Dad, Mike Burgess was one of the pioneers of Dirt Bike racing in
south La. and was one of the first to import race-ready dirt
bikes. He started Competition Cycles in Metairie back around
1970. He was instrumental in starting Enduro and MX and
developing riders and bikes (mostly Huskies, Pentons, DKW's,
Rokon's, etc.)
So Robbie grew up in the sport and when he stopped racing expert
class back in the late seventies/early eighties, he opened a
track in Gulfport, MS. Through the years he and Sue have
operated several including "Hillbilly Hills", Fernwood, Liberty,
Gonzales and Arenacross races in MS & LA. He pioneered some
successful series including the Winter Series of previous years.
They went out of business a couple years ago and have been
taking care of family issues. They have recently come back to
re-open a popular local track - Holeshot MX in Loranger, LA.
