The fifth annual Sandia Classic continues to live up to the hype as a "must
go" venue for vintage motorcycle racing enthusiasts. Why? How about perfect,
sparkling weather? Or the picturesque desert/mountain setting?
Maybe
it’s the montage of classic racing motorcycles; everything from British four
strokes, the early European motocross two-strokes to the later model dominating
Japanese bikes 70’s and 80’s. But the real treasure of the event is the people
that make the steel ponies come alive. Craig Murry, Steve Brown and crew
continue to do a top-notch job of promoting the event which brings throngs of
spectators out to the Sandia Speedway to celebrate motorcycle racing. Three time
AMA Grand National Dirt Track Champion and 1988 Superbike champion Bubby
Schobert was there to showcase his talent and sign posters. Three time AMA 250
National and Inter-AM champ Gary Jones was honored for his motocross
accomplishments and presented awards after having traded roost with the
competitors. AHRMA continues to combine cross-country, trials, flat track, road
race, motocross and a swap meet in one location.
Thursday
was the road race school and road course practice. Saturday was the vintage
trials competition and the "Duel of the Motorcycle Cops. A fine collection of
vintage Hondas was on display at the Motorcycle Safety Awareness tent all
weekend. Post vintage motocross racing was held on a newly designed MX track on
Saturday. Flat trackers competed for a $5,000 pro purse at the nearby Harvey
Chaplin Speedway on Saturday night.
Supermoto,
sidecars, Superbike, vintage class bikes, even a "Hooligans" class all took the
spotlight on the curvy road course. The really old motocross bikes competed on
Sunday on a specially designed track. Scan the results for the names of former
pro racers who have extended their career with vintage racing.
There
were some "firsts" for several riders. Dennis Pollacia with Motorcyclists
magazine got his first action on an old AT1 Yamaha for an article about old
school riders who bounced around the desert racing out of an old pick-up truck.
Former Pro MX’er Trey Jorski made his vintage debut and won a few classes. This
Oklahoma Cross Country rider enjoyed vintage racing and said he’ll be back for
more. The Louisiana G2G vintage team enjoyed a trio of firsts.
Mac
Edmonston not only won the Historic 250 Expert class in motocross but hopped the
fence to the road race course and won at his first attempt at road racing on an
MT125R. The reason he went so fast is the new white "fru-fru" under-armor his
wife bought him. He was trying to beat the team back to the pits and get changed
before being seen. Roy Jenkins won his first moto in 39 years in the Sportsman
125 Intermediate class. He’s currently looking for another 51 year old body that
doesn’t wilt halfway through the second moto. If you know of one in someone’s
garage or online please call 1-800-GETOFFTHECOUCH.
Aaron
Connors protected his points lead in the series on a 79 Yamaha 250 in the GP
novice class. He wants to thank the lady behind him who almost passed him
several times. Team coordinator Billy Orazio enjoyed bringing a half dozen
collectable classics for display at the Honda tent and held his swap meet
purchases down to three bikes, possibly a record for him. He promises to
personally return to racing action when he gets down to his racing weight of 400
lbs or so.
Team
mechanic Tim Lang kept things moving along quickly in the pits in between phone
calls to his new young wife. He could be heard behind the trailer saying things
like, "I’ll be home in 46 hours pumpernickel," punctuated with kissing noises.
See ya’ll at Barber!
